IntelliLung  – Intelligent Lung Support for Mechanically Ventilated Patients in the Intensive Care Unit

Invasive mechanical ventilation (MV) is one of the most frequently applied therapies in the intensive care unit (ICU). Support of lung function is accomplished with MV and, in most severe cases, with extracorporeal lung support (ELS). MV represents one of the most relevant life-saving therapies in the ICU. However, MV is increasingly recognized as a potentially harmful intervention. Inappropriate

MV settings in ICU patients are associated with organ damage, e.g. lung injury. Furthermore, many treatment decisions by the healthcare providers, especially regarding MV and ELS, remain incomprehensible to the patients and their relatives. The flow of information from caregivers to patients is challenged by a number of factors, including limited time and resources, communication problems as well as patients capacity to comprehend and memorise information.

The IntelliLung project aims at validating and extending the IntelliLung-Decision Support System (IntelliLung DSS) for guiding lung support (MV and MV+ELS) using artificial intelligence-based algorithms to improve the care of invasively mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU. Thereby improved settings of the ventilator and the extracorporeal lung support even in non-experienced hands can be achieved, as well as treating patients within safer therapy corridors for longer periods improving patients outcomes. Alongside,  IntelliLung will improve the flow of information from caregivers to patients in the ICU setting. The consortium will develop a digital solution that allows for the automatic generation of an extensive plain-language information package for patients and their relatives, communicating highly individualised information on diseases and knowledge-based disease-management strategies, thus facilitating high-quality current and subsequent care through health literacy empowerment. The consortium will perform a retrospective and prospective multi-centre study to validate the IntelliLung-DSS and the patient information software.
