The revitalization of the Vlasina Hydropower Plants is underway. For more than seven decades, these plants have represented a significant source of peak energy for Serbia’s power system.
The Vlasina HPP complex consists of a cascade system of four hydropower plants with 10 generating units and a total installed capacity of approximately 129 MW. The system also includes the Vlasina Lake reservoir and the Lisina pumping station, which pumps water from the Lisina reservoir back to Vlasina Lake, giving the entire system characteristics similar to a pumped-storage hydropower facility.
The modernization project, expected to last three to four years, will increase the total capacity of the plants by an additional 8 MW.

The Institute Mihajlo Pupin plays a key role in the reconstruction and modernization of the control and management system of the Vlasina hydropower plants. Given that the system comprises four power plants with ten generating units that have been in operation for more than seventy years, the project requires the integration of modern automation and supervisory control solutions with the existing electro-mechanical infrastructure.
Our scope of work includes the modernization of the control and management architecture, improvement of system reliability and operational safety, enhancement of operational efficiency, and ensuring long-term stability and interoperability.

“IMP-Automatomation and Control has been present in the Vlasina hydropower plants for many years with its control system. By modernizing the system across all four plants, including all ten generating units and the gate facilities, more efficient plant management will be achieved. At the same time, the work of employees at the power plants will be significantly facilitated, which gives us additional motivation to develop a reliable and efficient control system. The revitalization of this complex will increase available capacity while ensuring long-term operational reliability and contributing to the energy security and stability of the power supply,” said Milan Bjedov, Head of the Hydropower Control Systems Department.
