The Mihajlo Pupin Institute, together with a consortium of research and educational institutions from Serbia, has been awarded a project by the European Commission in the field of artificial intelligence, which will lead to the creation of the “Artificial Intelligence Factory” in Serbia (SAIFA – Serbian Artificial Intelligence Antenna Factory).
The total value of the SAIFA project is €3.8 million, and its goal is to establish a national platform for the development and testing of artificial intelligence — a center that supports AI innovation throughout its entire life cycle. SAIFA will provide access to advanced computing resources, tools, datasets, and consulting communities for the public sector, startups, and industry. The Factory will focus on key domains such as culture and language, environment, health, and energy.
As a branch of two existing AI Factories – PHAROS from Greece and the Italian IT4LIA AI Factory – SAIFA will enhance the processes of validation, testing, and implementation of AI solutions at the European level. Moreover, the project will significantly strengthen Serbia’s national infrastructure for developing high-performance technologies.
“SAIFA transforms fragmented AI capacities into a unified innovation flow. Our role is to ensure the quality, safety, and applicability of AI solutions — from the laboratory to real-world environments. In this way, we build a bridge between science, industry, and the public sector, accelerating the development of trustworthy artificial intelligence in Serbia and the region,” said Valentina Janev, PhD, Senior Research Associate at the Mihajlo Pupin Institute.
The Institute’s partners on the project include the School of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade (project coordinator), Institute of Physics, Institute for Artificial Intelligence, Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering of the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Science, University of Kragujevac, and the Office for Information Technologies and eGovernment.
