The second phase of revitalizing the “Bajina Bašta” reversible hydropower plant is currently underway, with the Mihajlo Pupin Institute playing a key role in modernizing the management processes.

RHE “Bajina Bašta” is crucial for the functioning of our country’s power system, and the modernization of the R2 unit is expected to extend its operational life by several decades while ensuring safer and more efficient electricity production management.

By taking responsibility for the revitalization of the management system, electrical protection system, and generator voltage equipment, IMP–Automatika plays a crucial role in the project’s implementation. Our engineers are integrating cutting-edge solutions that enhance the hydropower plant’s precision, safety, and efficiency. By applying the latest technologies, the Mihajlo Pupin Institute continues to contribute to the modernization of Serbia’s energy system.

Milan Bjedov, Head of the Hydropower Systems Department, explains that the system is based on conceptual solutions and redundancy that have been tested on numerous hydropower plants.
“All installed components and control algorithms have been thoroughly tested, ensuring the plant’s stable operation and efficiency. It is also important to emphasize that our engineers are always ready to respond to the needs of their colleagues at the plant and resolve any potential challenges,” he adds.

Speaking about the significance of the Institute’s involvement in this project, Milan highlights that this is the only facility of its kind in Serbia, providing great flexibility to the power system.
“This flexibility works both ways—whether it’s quickly compensated for an electricity shortage caused by the failure of a thermal power unit or redirecting excess energy to pump water into Zaovine Lake, increasing reserves for potential emergency electricity generation,” Milan concludes.
