At the recent CIGRE 2024 Symposium, held within Session C2 “Power System Operation and Control,” the latest research and innovations from the Horizon Europe project R²D² (“Reliability, Resilience and Defense Technology for the Grid”) were presented.

The paper titled “Application of Isolated Environments and Digital Twins in Power Systems – Insights from the R2D2 Project” is a result of collaboration between the Mihajlo Pupin Institute, EMS, and SCC. It introduces the fundamental concepts of digital twins and sandboxing, emphasizing their application in power systems and SCADA/EMS environments. The paper further showcases R2D2 project solutions implementing these methodologies to ensure secure testing of tool functionalities and risk assessments in power systems before deployment into operational environments. The authors are Mr. Goran Jakupović, Marija Popović, Igor Bundalo, and Milan Josifović from the Mihajlo Pupin Institute, Dušan Prešić from the Security Coordination Center (SCC), and Nemanja Vukojičić from Elektromreža Srbije.

The second paper, titled “Implementation of ENTSO-E Rules for System Restoration Following Grid Splits,” focuses on the application of complex system restoration procedures in case of grid splits. It highlights predefined steps for regional coordination in Southeast Europe through a centralized platform, aligning with European regulations that assign responsibilities to regional coordination centers during major disturbances. The authors of this paper are Igor Bundalo, Mr. Goran Jakupović, and Marija Popović from the Mihajlo Pupin Institute, Srđan Subotić from Elektromreža Srbije, and Kristina Janošević, Predrag Simić, and Dušan Prešić from the Security Coordination Center (SCC).

The CIGRE 2024 was also an opportunity to meet the relevant stakeholders and present the other EU-funded projects such as (InterPED, OMEGA-X, GoToTwin). More information about the EU-funded projects can be found at this link.
